Problem

Children with dyslexia often experience negative behaviors and personality issues, which can significantly impact their quality of life. However, in China, many parents are not fully aware of this condition and do not understand the learning difficulties their children face.

Solution

I developed a reading application with an auxiliary tool designed to make reading easier for children with dyslexia. This app not only facilitates reading but also includes training exercises. In addition to benefiting children, it helps parents understand their child's challenges better by observing their reading behaviors.

Background

In China, parents often expect their children to achieve high academic goals regardless of their abilities. This puts immense pressure on children, especially those with dyslexia, leading to feelings of unhappiness and anxiety.

Research

I started with preliminary research to understand what is Dyslexia, parental knowledge and challenges and current professioanl training methods.

And here are the findings:

Scientific instruction for parents is necessary

Parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders might themselves have weaknesses at the cognitive and behavioural.

Abnormal Cognitive Ability

The difficulties of children with dyslexia are not caused by hearing or vision defects, and are not the result of retarded intellectual development, nor are they due to lack of learning motivation or educational opportunities, but are related to abnormal cognitive ability.

Reading Practice for children is important

Though there is no cure for it, a good parenting and reading environment will reduce the severity of symptoms in children with dyslexia.

Serious ripple effect

Children with dyslexia had the personality characteristics tendency of psychoticism, neuroticism, introversion, emotionally unstable, and more behavioral problems.

Then I conducted an in-depth interview with our target users to uncover their emotions and behavioral patterns concerning existing challenges and the potential for a digital healthcare collaboration platform.

Pains

- Limited resources available to assist children exhibiting symptoms of dyslexia.
- Minimal effectiveness observed in existing training methods.
- Limited availability of time to take her child to the hospital.

Gains

- Desires easier access to authoritative information.
- Aims for her child to genuinely enjoy reading.
- Open to embracing new products to support her child.

Q: Do you know about  Dyslexia? How do you know it?

"Yes, I've observed that Rosie often substitutes synonymous words and expressions when reading. Additionally, she struggles with distinguishing between certain words like "how," "now," "when," "then," "here," and "there".
"I first learned about dyslexia from other parents, and later I conducted extensive research online. However, I found limited resources available in Chinese about dyslexia. The information I found was not helpful in assisting Rosie with distinguishing between characters like 丿, 扌, and 丶".

Q: Reading Practice for children is important

"I accompanied her to undergo dyslexia tests on various foreign websites".
"I've been using physical objects like 'belly' and 'butt' to help her distinguish between the sounds of 'b' and 'd'. Additionally, I make it a habit to read books to her every night before bedtime".

Solution

User Flow

Auxiliary Tool

I was inspired by accessibility widgets typically designed for people with disabilities, such as those with visual impairments. According to NN/g's research, individuals with visual impairments often rely on their own assistive tools on mobile devices. However, I observed that there is currently a lack of similar tools tailored specifically for children with dyslexia. This led me to conclude that there are significant opportunities to develop auxiliary tools that can enhance the reading experiences of children with dyslexia.

Interesting Training

The idea of using toy blocks came to mind while playing with my nephew, who is deeply engaged with the game. I thought about introducing this enjoyable activity into the reading practice process as a way to make learning more engaging and interactive for children with dyslexia.

Therefore, I break down Chinese characters into their components, allowing users to identify each part individually. Then, like assembling "building blocks," they piece these parts together to form complete characters. This approach enhances the enjoyment of reading and improves memory retention.
